International Consensus Conference (ICC)
on "Challenges in End-of-Life Care in the Intensive Care Unit "
Brussels - 24-25 April 2003 (Experts presentations) and 26-27 April 2003 (Jurors deliberations)

OBJECTIVES : The purpose of a Consensus Conference is to produce an informed debate on a limited subject presented in the form of 5 main questions, with the aim of evaluating available scientific information and to advance understanding of the issue in question. It consists of a two-day conference, during which experts from different disciplines and/or from different schools make short presentations, aimed at answering the 5 questions previously defined by the Scientific Advisors. Prior to the conference, the jury, made up of 11 non experts in the field, is provided with background documentation about the presentations to be made by the experts. After attending the Conference, the jury meets up over two days, in order to prepare a Consensus statement on the issues raised.
The Consensus text may then be published by the 5 organising societies (ATS AMERICAN THORACIC SOCIETY – ERS EUROPEAN RESPIRATORY SOCIETY – ESICM EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE – SCCM SOCIETY OF CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE – SRLF SOCIETE DE REANIMATION DE LANGUE FRANÇAISE).

THE QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED

  1. Is there a problem with End-of-Life care in the ICU?

  2. What is the "epidemiology" of death in the ICU?

  3. Who takes the decision to limit life sustaining treatments in the ICU?

  4. What explains the differences between countries and cultures regarding End-of-Life care in the ICU?

  5. What is the optimal care for patients dying in the ICU?
