EUROPEAN MASTER IN BIOETHICS

For the first time several eminent European universities and institutes have combined their efforts in the field of bioethics by developing a two-year master’s programme that focuses on all issues currently relevant to bioethics. When completed successfully the programme leads to a recognised master’s degree in bioethics.

The European Master in Bioethics programme consists of five introductory and eleven specialised courses comprising a total of 1,770 working hours. The sixteen courses are offered in four residential months spread across the two-year period of training, which is given alternatively in one of the following four participating countries : March 2000 (Nijmegen - the Netherlands), September 2000 (Madrid - Spain), March 2001 (Leuven - Belgium), September 2001 (Padova - Italy).

The five introductory courses cover the following subjects : Introduction to bioethics, Ethical theories, Methods of ethics, History and evolution of ethics in health care, Clinical bioethics.

The 11 specialised courses give a good grounding in the following areas : Human and clinical genetics, Palliative care, Technology assessment and ethics, Choices in health care, Assisted reproduction, Ethics of care, Research ethics, Public health and prevention, Treatment decisions, Religion and bioethics, Care of the terminally ill.
